Black Sand Beach - Makena

The Black Sand Beach at Makena

The Black Sand Beach at Makena State Park is probably one of the most unused beaches on Maui. If seclusion is your goal, this may be the right beach for you. It is undeveloped (although development is visible from the beach) and unkempt, with a somewhat coarse black lava sand. There's coral and rocks in the water, even right at the shore, but this is the way nature intended it to be.

A/K/A

This beach is also known as Naupaka Beach, after the Naupaka shrubs that presumably grow there. Naupaka blossoms are white or light-colored and look like half flowers.

Hours of Operation

The Black Sand Beach is open from 5:00am to 9:00pm daily.

To get to the Black Sand Beach in Makena, drive as if you were going to Big Beach. Just before the drive way for Big Beach Entry 1, there's a dirt driveway on the right. Turn right and drive to the parking lot at the end of the road. The road is winding, rutted and rocky, but should be passable with just about any kind of vehicle except in the wettest conditions.
