Little Beach

Little Beach is the only generally accepted clothing optional beach on Maui. The only other one that comes close is Red Sand Beach in Hana. At Little Beach you can enjoy nude recreation whenever you would like.

Public nudity is illegal in Hawaii, although very little enforcement of anti-nudity laws is done at Little Beach. More likely is enforcement of other laws against such things as drug dealing and drinking in state parks.

Little Beach is easily the most crowded beach on Maui. It is only about 1/8 of a mile long, but everyone who wants to sunbathe nude goes there.

There are occasionally gawkers or people taking pictures, but in general Little Beach is a charming close-knit community of people who just want to grin and bare it all.

Little Beach is also known as Pu'u Ola'i Beach, after the lava outcropping you must hike over to get to it.

Weather

Little Beach (and Big Beach and the Makena area in general) has a curious weather pattern that produces a cloud over the beach most afternoons (some people call this the "Makena Cloud"). This is usually a blessing, since the beach can be very hot when the sun is beating down on you, but keep in mind that it might not be 100% clear skies all the time here, even if it is clear at your condo in Kihei. The forecast below is a general forecast for Kihei, so it may be cloudier at Makena than what is predicted here.

Getting There

To get to Little Beach you must park at the first parking lot for Makena State Park Big Beach ("Entry 1"), walk to the beach, take a right, and walk all the way to the north end of the beach. Here you will hike over a steep lava outcropping (the tip of Pu'u Ola'i) about 50 feet high. Many hundreds of people do this every day, so you shouldn't worry too much about whether you're up to the challenge, but you want to have some footwear (at least Flip-Flops), and you don't want to be carrying too much stuff (a full cooler is definitely going to slow you down). If water levels are high and/or sand levels are low, the path can be more treacherous. Be careful of waves as you walk through the rocks to the base of the Pu'u.

Facilities

There are no facilities at Little Beach. There are porta-potties near the parking lot at Big Beach, Makena State Park Entrance 1. There is sometimes a Jawz Fish Tacos truck at that parking lot as well, and other food concession vendors out on the road.

Events

On Sundays there's fire dancing and a drum circle starting in the late afternoon and culminating at sunset. If you decide to stay past sunset, don't forget to bring a flashlight!
